Eatery: Le Comptoir – Imaginative food

I was so excited to eat here after realizing how new and hot this place was. Little did I know that I would have a “first” here. Yes. I ate pig’s heart at Le Comptoir Charcuteries et Vins. When my friend ordered the dish, I just skimmed the description; read roasted squash and figured it was a vegetarian dish. Truth is this dish was a masterpiece, with a medley of flavors and textures.
Considering I’m not particularly adventurous in trying strange meats or animal organs, I was very pleased with this experience. I have so much respect for Chefs like Ségué Lepage, who take you on a journey of their imaginative creations. And he should be proud; this restaurant was named 8th best new restaurant in Canada, in the 2011 edition of EnRoute magazine.
All of the dishes we tried were well balanced even though they were a mishmash of ingredient

Top 6 tips to transform your space for staging or for living

Are you looking for a quick and efficient way to brighten up your space and make it look its best without spending too much? You can use these tips for staging your house for sale or for your own enjoyment.
These are some tips from decorators which will make each room stand out (and make your friends jealous of your talents?)
Each room has to have a ‘focal point’ or a main attraction. Either the room already has a natural focal point or you will have to create one and decorate around it. The easiest way is to look for an architectural feature of the room, if there is one. We will give you some examples and the ways to accentuate these features:
Do you have a fireplace? If you do, you already have the main attraction! Depending on the age and the look of it, you can bring it out by either changing the bricks, or painting them. If you need to enhance the fireplace, add the artificial stone around and above it all the way to the ceiling or paint the wall above it a different color. Then add a mantel and place some accessories on it. Don’t overdo it though – just a few well-chosen ones will suffice. A nice painting, a couple of candle holders, maybe even an interesting mirror… Complete the area by placing an area rug in front of it.
If there is a Half-wall in the room and you choose it as a focal point, you can transform it just by changing its color. Any opening to another room can be accentuated by changing the trim around the opening or the inside of the opening. This unexpected look will be sure to catch your visitors’ eye. You can achieve a similar effect with a dropped ceiling; paint it a tone darker than the walls to bring it out.
Any window can be an accent as well, especially if they are big and interesting or offer a nice view. One inexpensive option to bring them out is to paint the window trims a different color than the walls. New blinds, shades and curtains make a huge difference! By choosing the window treatments of the same color as the wall, you will achieve a more elegant and formal look. If you are looking for a more casual look, select the window treatments of a complementary color. For all the details on how to decorate with shades, blinds and shutters, please read http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/decorating-windows-with-shades-blinds-and-shutters.html. An important tip: long curtains make any window seem larger and the current trend is to have the curtains slightly train on the floor for an elegant image.
An Accent Wall brings a wow factor to even the most ordinary room. Usually, the accent wall will be the one next to another focal point (such as a fireplace or a window) if there is one or it will BECOME the focal point of that room. In that case, it should be the first wall you see when you enter a room or a wall on the side of the room. For example, you could accent the wall behind the bed; choose one wall in the living room or the back wall of the dining room so the dining room table is set against its backdrop. The accent wall is usually a darker and deeper color than the other walls. Not sure which color to choose for your accent wall? Find a color you like in a pillow, curtain, sofa or artwork and match a paint color to it for your accent wall.
Most of us don’t have enough lighting. Brighten and lighten your space and you won’t believe the difference. New light fixtures will modernize your décor and you can use lamps to accentuate spaces and objects in the rooms, such as a fireplace, an artwork or even a nice plant. Three main types of lighting should be present in every room. The general lighting could be overhead or recessed lighting for the whole room. As it is usually not sufficient and some rooms (such as the majority of living rooms in North America) don’t have any general lighting, you need to add accent lighting in specific areas, such as table lamps or stand up lamps. Finally, don’t forget task lighting, where needed, to accomplish a specific task, such as kitchen bar lights, or a reading lamp. For all the DOs and DONTs of lighting, please read http://interiordec.about.com/od/lighting/a/Lighting-Dos-And-Do-Nots.htm.
Artwork and accessories are the final touch, subtle but very important. Lamps, decorative cushions and carpeting are only a few of the many objects that you can accessorise with to add a color to a space and harmonise it. For example, if you prefer neutral colors on your walls and furniture, you could accentuate the space with a favorite color – such as apple green, deep purple or orange. Just add some cushions, artwork, and a few decorative objects and spread them around the room.
Whether you are preparing your house for sale or doing it to enjoy living in it, do a bit of research, collect some pictures of the rooms and looks you prefer, get some paint samples and then try it. Best of luck!

Eatery: Unique Izakaya Dinning Experience at Kazu
If you’re sitting there thinking to yourself “What’s a Kazu?”, then where have you been?!!
Kazu is not a what, but a who.
He is a chef; a culinary genius who has brought to Montreal a totally unique Izakaya dinning experience, both for ambiance and taste. When you walk in (usually after a 10-15 min wait…well worth it!), you notice that the only real decor on the wall are the menus, written in marker, on scrap paper. But what really stands out besides the smiling faces of patrons and workers alike, are the aromas surrounding the delicious meal you’re about to eat.
At lunch, your meal is always served with a mini soup or salad. I say mini because the salad is no more then 3 mouthfuls! And might I add, it’s best version of potato salad I have ever had (sorry mom).
If you’re going for supper and considering which appetizer to start with, please try the shrimp pancake. It’s a shrimp patty, which I believe is served on a type of English muffin, covered in salad and mini rice puffs. But what really gets your taste buds going, is the sauce. This is what makes Kazu a culinary genius; the flavours he blends aren’t like anything we’ve ever had in this city. Whether it’s a dressing or a mayonnaise blend, it’s all unique and divine Continue reading: Eatery: Unique Izakaya Dinning Experience at Kazu

RE/MAX Housing Market Outlook 2010: Greater Montreal
You might remember last week’s RE/MAX 2010 Market Forecast, where we briefly quoted some of the report’s outlook for the Canadian Market. Today we’ve outlined the Greater Montreal market forecast, taken from the same report. So far the news are excellent and there is a lot to expect from the new year. The following text is one big quote. I’ve highlighted the most important areas for a quick & easy reading. To view the complete report (PDF file) click here.
Greater Montreal Market 2010- According to RE/MAX:
Despite a slower than usual start to the year, the Greater Montréal’s residential real estate market continues to experience strong upward momentum.
Spurred by rock-bottom interest rates and growing consumer confidence levels, home sales are expected to top 43,000 by year end, a 5% increase over the 40,916 units sold in 2008. Average price is forecast to escalate further, recording a 3% increase to $266,000 in 2009, setting a new record for the city.
“Demand for homes on the Island of Montréal remained brisk for much of the year, fuelled in large part by a continuous influx of first-time buyers.”
The city boasts one of the highest percentages of renters in the country, many of whom chose to venture into the market to take advantage of favourable market conditions this year.
- Affordability was key, with entry-level purchasers seeking product ideally priced between $200,000 and $250,000.
- Single-family homes in the suburbs represented the best value for the dollar, with a 1,200 sq. ft. home on a 5,000 sq. ft. lot starting at $235,000.
- Semi-detached homes could be purchased for even less, starting at $175,000 to $200,000 in areas like Rosemere.
- Condominiums—an affordable alternative in the centre of the city—have also seen an upswing in sales, particularly in recent months, as the oversupply of units is absorbed. Inventory levels were down in virtually every community by year-end.
With housing values steadily increasing over the past decade in Montréal, real estate has proven to be a solid, long-term investment. Given the volatility in the stock market over the past 18 months, more and more investors in the Montréal area are turning to tangible investments like bricks and mortar.
Consumer confidence in the province overall has held up relatively well, with retail sales and home prices performing above the national average. Nonresidential construction also continues to support the provincial economic underpinning, with a five year $42 billion public infrastructure spending program in place.
Montréalers continue to reaffirm their faith in real estate and 2010 will be no exception. The number of homes sold is forecast to climb further, rising another two per cent to 44,000 units by year-end 2010.
Housing values will continue their ascent, with average price poised to break yet another record—settling in at $272,000. Consumer confidence should serve to bolster housing activity, especially with improvement in economic performance throughout the year.
Look to first-time buyers- as well as move-up purchasers- to act in tandem, driving the market, particularly on the Island of Montréal.
“Prices in the Top-End are expected to stabilize further…”
As a result, giving the green light to purchasers in that exclusive segment of the market priced in excess of $600,000. Traditional luxury strongholds such as Westmount, Outremont, and Mount Royal should experienced more balanced market conditions.
Given strong demand and a limited supply of affordable product, the multiple offer is expected to re-emerge, although not to the extent seen in 2006 and 2007. Investors will also take part in the rebound, sparking demand for income-producing properties such as four, six, and eightplexes. While availability is limited, this type of housing is the investment of choice for many who choose to live in one unit and rent the remainder.
